The Children

Poem by Sandra Gaal Hayman, Mount Annan, NSW

They came and took the children
To places far away
Didn't stop to listen
To what their mothers had to say

Came and took the children
Led them by the hand
Never to return again
To their ancestral lands

They came and took the children
Tears fell like rain upon that day
I lost my only brother
When they took us both away

They came and took the children
Our lives were not the same
Not knowing where we came from
They even changed our name

When they came and took the children

Sandra’s poem is not inspired by her own experiences, but by those of others. She tried to capture the heartbreak and pain of the stolen children.

Thank you, Sandra, for sharing your poem!
