Politicians don't like to consult. But consultation works, because the local Aboriginal people know far better what to do and what works than a politician in Canberra.
Politicians like to be heavy-handed. They think this wins them brownie points at the next election. But the right thing to do is to help Aboriginal people with self-determination as they know best what works in their communities.
Politicians cut rather than spend. All of these areas desperately need money, but Aboriginal prison rates need urgent attention because they are at crisis levels.
Politicians lack the strength to admit they are wrong. None of the main political parties stopped the NT intervention despite it being flawed from the beginning, and the only way to empower the affected communities again is to help them handle their own affairs.
Politicians love stereotypical gestures. Imagine the message you sent if you would celebrate successes and achievements of Aboriginal people and help fight the negative stereotypes which are still in many heads?
